The main prerequisite for developing sunflowers with altered leaf architecture able to withstand high seeding rates and economical soil nutrient uptake is the existence of genetic variability in the starting materials. In our study, there were significant differences between the mean values of all the traits under study. The variability of the F2 generation was larger than that of the F1 generation in all of the traits. Broad sense heritability of petiole angle ranged between 95.5% (OCMS1 x NS-K) and 98.6% (NS-22B x NS-BD), that of leaf number between 71.8% (OSMS1 x NS-NDF) and 93.5% (NS-NDF x NS-K), and that of total leaf area per plant from 48.7% (NS-22B x NS-K) to 96.5% (OSMS1 x NS-K).
