Lead contamination of soil and plants by vehicular exhaust fumes in a suburb [Yugoslavia]

Soil and plant samples collected in a village of Rumenka (near Novi Sad town, Serbia, Yugoslavia) have been analyzed for total and available Pb. Soil samples had been collected from front lawns and gardens in the rear, 20-50 m away from the road, shielded by houses and fences. It has been found that the former samples contained two to three times more total and available Pb than the later ones. The analyses of plant materials have shown that the Pb content in the grass from front lawns matches that found in pastures located about 1500 m away from lead and zinc smelters.
