Six ZP maize hybrids in three densities (40,000, 50,000 and 60,000 plants per ha) were planted in the random block design on the smonitza soil type. Suxty kg/ha of NPK mineral fertilizer (15:15:15) was ploughed in, followed by 80 kg/ha N (KAN) dressing. The aim of the study was to evaluate the optimal growing density of these hybrids under the agroecological conditions of the Cacak valley (Serbia, Yugoslavia). Yied significantly varied with study years (1997 and 1998). In the first year, it averaged 13.09 t/ha and in the second 4.15 t/ha of the seed with 14% moisture. In the meteorologically more favourable first year, the highest yield was recorded with the greatest density (14.35 t/ha). In the following year, the increase in density resulted in slight yield reduction, i.e. 4.26 t/ha, 4.12 t/ha and 4.08 t/ha, respectively. The results obtained showed that the density for growing maize on smonitza cannot be recommended pecisely under the conditions of dry soil cultivation.
