Effect of soil compaction on microbiological activity in the calcareous chernozem and humogley soil under sugar beet has been studied. Soil compaction resulting from the use of heavy machinery decreases total number of aerobic bacteria, number of ammonifiers, nitrifiers, azotobacter, oligonitrophilic bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, cellulolytic microorganisms, dehydrogenase, protease and urease activity and increased the total number of anaerobic bacteria and number of denitrifics.
