Application of nodular cast iron in the manufacture of agricultural machinery and equipment
2001
Jesic, D. (Tribotehnik, Rijeka (Croatia))
In the paper a comparison of mechanical properties is drawn between standard qualities of nodular cast iron without heat treatment, quenched and tempered nodular cast iron as well as austempered nodular cast iron. The austempering process of nodular cast iron, resulting in the structure of bainitic ferrite and retained austenite, is described. The process parameters and required equipment are also given. Possible savings are discussed when steel components are substituted by austempered nodular cast iron. These savings include: savings of energy, savings due to near net shape forming by casting and savings due to better machinability. Examples are given of the application of austempered nodular cast iron in engineering constructions.
