The unfavourable state of beech forests in Serbia (Yugoslavia) and the need of reclamation of vast areas of degraded forms (152,111 ha or 37.6% of the total area of beech forests in Serbia) requires a greater attention to be devoted to the study of biological-ecological bases of management. Before the works on reclamation, it is necessary to study more thoroughly the initial phases of regeneration. Based on the to date knowledge on beech development, the prevailing opinion is that beech has great flexibility in its ontogenetic, adaptive and traumatic reaction to environmental impacts. In different stand conditions, beech growth intensity and development degree vary, which can be a good basis for the choice of technological solutions in the regeneration process of stands of various structure, in different types of beech forests.
