Both floristic and vegetation survey into Titelski Breg area, Serbia (Yugoslavia) has shown that this loess plateau may be classified among the best preserved steppe regions in this country. Although a typical steppe is restricted today to its slopes, near 630 autochthonous plant species pointing out a considerable floristic diversity of this region have been recorded. Certain species like Alyssum linifolium Steph., Alkanna tinctoria (L.) Tausch, Ajuga laxmanni (L.) Benth., Orchis ustulata L., Ophrys sphaegodes Mill., Pulsatila pratensis (L.) Mill. and Colchicium arenarium W. at K. have been unquestionably indeterminated on this loess plateau due to an increasing environmental disturbance. Sysimbrium polymorphum (Murr.) Roth, Allium atroviolaceum Boiss and Allium paniculatum L., occur in only a few individual microhabitats while this group of rare plants should be also supplemented by Adonis vernalis L., Prunus tenella Batsch, Prunus fruticosae Pallas, Sternbergia colchiciflora W. et K., Iris pumila L., Vinca herbacea W. et K., and Ranunculus illyricus L. The increasing rate of the loss of plant diversity has imposed a need for conservation of this rare and vulnerable plants and their habitats, as well as for the protection of the whole Titelski Breg area (Serbia, Yugoslavia).
