Obesity is chronic non-communicable disease with high frequency onset in Serbia&Montenegro. The evidence of connection of obesity and preobesity with high co morbidity prevalence adds importance to this problem. In this study a group of 68 obese and preobese patients (BMI 25-40) were treated by diet therapy during consecutive 12 weeks. Along with dietary energy deficiency of 500 kcal from the estimated energy needed for each patient, intake of total fats was below 25% with less than 10% of saturated fats and increase in non-starch polysaccharide intake. From the 6th week in 30 patients from this group who had in their records data on chronic bowel dysfunction and constipation, fermented low fat functional dairy product with probiotic culture Bifidobacterium longum BB536 and inulin was introduced on daily basis. Values of BMI, waist to hip ratio, mid-arm circumference and total body fat percent were measured at the onset of the study and after 3, 6 and 12 weeks in all patients. Diet therapy is not only the remedy for obesity but even more important it can, also, help reduce co morbidity problems in obese and preobese patients.
