Herencia y evolución : Desde Darwin y Mendel hasta la síntesis moderna | Heredity and evolution. From Darwin and Mendel to the Modern Synthesis

La evolución orgánica sólo puede interpretarse a través de la convergencia entre el darwinismo y el mendelismo. Ambas corrientes científicas surgieron en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Durante los últimos años de ese siglo y aquellos posteriores y cercanos al redescubrimiento de las leyes de Mendel, en 1900, el darwinismo sufrió un eclipse temporal que se extendió por alrededor de tres décadas. La mayoría de los biólogos que desestimaron la importancia del mecanismo de selección natural postulado por Darwin en 1859 aceptaron la validez de las leyes de Mendel de segregación y distribución independiente de los factores hereditarios. En este trabajo se describen las circunstancias históricas y los fundamentos científicos que condujeron a la divergencia entre el darwinismo y el mendelismo, así como la inspiración de notables científicos, que demostraron —especialmente entre 1926 y 1950— la convergencia de estas dos visiones que habían sido erróneamente consideradas irreconciliables. Su contribución a los fundamentos de la Síntesis Moderna de la Teoría Evolutiva y a la creación de una nueva disciplina —la genética de poblaciones— son especialmente destacadas.

Organic evolution can only be understood through the convergence between Darwinism and Mendelism. Both biological approaches arose during the second half of the nineteenth century. Through the later years of that century and those that followed the rediscovery of Mendel´s Laws, in 1900, Darwinism suffered a temporal eclipse. This opposition to Darwin´s theory lasted around three decades. Most of the biologists who ignored the evolutionary meaning of natural selection agreed with the theory of particulate inheritance. This work deals with the historic circumstances and scientific arguments that led to rejection to the convergence between Darwinism and Mendelism, as well as with the inspiration of outstanding scientists who demonstrated -mainly between 1926 and 1950- that both, Darwin´s and Mendel´s theories, were a necessary complement to understand biological evolution. Their contribution to the fundamentals of the Modern Synthesis of Evolutionary Theory and the foundation of a new biological discipline -population genetics- are specially highlighted.
