"La almeja Panopea globosa es una especie vulnerable y de interés comercial. Con la finalidad de contribuir con indicadores biológicos útiles en el análisis de alternativas para su manejo, se estudió la condición fisiológica de P. globosa mediante el índice de condición (IC) y el índice de glándula digestiva (IGD); y se relacionaron con factores ambientales. El IC demostró ser buen indicador del periodo reproductivo y el IGD del periodo en que se alimenta la almeja. En conjunto, los índices representan una aproximación metabólica. En relación con los factores ambientales, se comprobó que el estado fisiológico de la almeja depende directamente de la disponibilidad de alimento e indirectamente de la temperatura."
Show more [+] Less [-]"The geoduck clam, Panopea globosa, is a vulnerable species of commercial interests. In order to contribute with useful biological indicators in the analysis for management alternatives, this study addresses the physiological condition of Panopea globosa by the condition index (IC) and the digestive gland index (IGD) that were both related to environmental factors. The IC proved to be a good indicator of the reproductive period and the IGD a good indicator of the period in which the clam feeds. Overall, the index rates represent a metabolic approximation. In relation to environmental factors, it was found that the physiological state of the clam is directly dependent on food availability and indirectly on temperature."
