COMPARACIÓN DEL NICHO TRÓFICO Y BIOACUMULACIÓN DE METALES PESADOS EN DOS COLONIAS DE CRÍA DE SULA NEBOUXII Y SULA LEUCOGASTER EN EL GOLFO DE CALIFORNIA

"Seabirds play an important role in the structure and functioning of the marine ecosystems. Because of their abundance, top position in the food webs and rapid responses to prey availability, they have been used as bioindicators of changes in ocean food webs or the presence of pollutants. Currently, many seabird populations around the world, and specially tropical seabirds, as The Blue-footed Booby (Sula nebouxii) and the Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster) are in decline. We studied the diet and compared the trophic niche of these two species in two close islands of Gulf of California, as a measure of their interspecific competition. For that, we analyzed the stable isotope ratios of δ13C and δ15N composition of feathers from adults birds nesting together in the same islands. We also determined the concentrations of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in the feathers of adult birds of both species. We found high similarity between the trophic niche and diet of both species in both islands. We also found that the niche differentiation by interspecific competition was higher between the Tortuga island`s populations. The trophic niche was wider in both San Ildefonso island´s populations, showing higher individual variation in their diets than in Tortuga´s. S.leucogaster diets´s composition were more similar between islands than S.nebouxii´s diets. S. nebouxii’s feathers had higher values of 15N maybe because they preyed more on herrings (Ophistonema libertate) and anchovies (Anchoa sp), while S.leucogaster consumed more Sardines (Sardinops). We found 13C values less negative in San Ildefonso birds, suggesting they forage nearer of the coast that Tortugas`s Boobies. The diet of both species was composed mainly by Cupleidae y Engraulidae, but their percentages were lower than in previous studies. The detected change in the diet could be as a consequence of the global warming affecting the fishes abundance on the Gulf of California, but longer studies are necessary. We found detectable values of Cu, Cd and Zn, in the feathers of the four populations, but not Pb. Those levels were not significantly different among species or islands. The highest values were Zn, but its levels are in the range of other studies. Cadmium levels were higher than other studies. It might be because bioaccumulation or they might exist naturally in the sediments. In conclusion, we confirmed the importance of Boobies as bioindicators of changes in the marine conditions..."

"Las aves marinas desempeñan un papel importante en la estructura y funcionamiento de los ecosistemas marinos. Debido a su abundancia, posición tope en la cadena trófica y respuestas rápidas a la disponibilidad de presas, se han utilizado como indicadores de cambios en las redes tróficas del océano y detectores de problemas de conservación como la presencia de contaminantes. En la actualidad, muchas poblaciones de aves marinas y especialmente las tropicales, están en declive. El Bobo Patas Azules (Sula nebouxii) y el Bobo Café (Sula leucogaster) se encuentran en esta problemática. En este trabajo se abordó un estudio de su dieta y de la competencia interespecífica en el nicho trófico de estas dos aves anidando juntas en dos islas cercanas del Golfo de California. Para ello se analizó la composición isotópica de sus plumas (δ13C y δ15N). También se compararon sus niveles de contaminación analizando el contenido de cobre (Cu), Cadmio (Cd), plomo (Pb) y zinc (Zn) en plumas de adultos de ambas especies. Encontramos que las dos especies tienen nichos tróficos y dietas bastante similares en las dos islas. Pero se observó cierta divergencia de nicho por competencia trófica entre ellas que fue mayor entre las poblaciones de isla Tortuga que entre las de isla San Ildefonso. Las poblaciones tuvieron un nicho trófico un poco más amplio en San Ildefonso que en Tortuga, lo que implica mayor variación individual en las dietas de esta isla. La coincidencia en la dieta entre islas fue mayor en S. leucogaster que en S. nebouxii. Las plumas de S. nebouxii tuvieron mayores niveles de 15N, quizás porque consumió más arenques (Opisthonema libertate) y anchovetas (Anchoa sp), mientras que S. leucogaster prefirió más sardinas (Sardinops sp). Las poblaciones de San Ildefonso parecen forrajear en aguas menos pelágicas que las de Tortuga ya que tienen valores menos negativos de 13C. Las dos especies se alimentaron fundamentalmente de Cupleidae y Engraulidae, pero en menor medida de lo reportado en estudios anteriores. Este cambio en la dieta podría reflejar un cambio en las abundancias de presas disponibles, quizás como consecuencia del calentamiento global, pero es necesario un estudio a más largo plazo para confirmarlo. Todas las poblaciones tuvieron valores detectables de Cu, Cd y Zn, pero no de Pb. Los niveles de metales pesados no fueron diferentes entre especies o islas. El Zn es el que presentó mayores valores, pero en rangos dentro de lo reportado en otros estudios..."
