2015

Significant strides have been made by Self Help Groups (SHG5) often under adverse conditions and constraints. With this backdrop, a study was performed about SHGs engaged in fisheries at Raipur District in Chhattisgarh with a view to analyse the constraints faced by them. Study was focused on 115 SHGs involved in fisheries. Constraints were grouped into four subheads, i.e., social, financial, core and infrastructure constraints. Having ascertained agreement among SHGs regarding ranking of constraints using Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance; constraints faced by SHGs were analysed using Rank Based Quotient (RBQ) method which ranged between 41.87 for core constraints to 91.87 for financial constraints. Financial constraints were more severe followed by infrastructure, social and core constraints. Among financial constraints, credit availability was more severe. Among infrastructural and core constraints, lack of ice storage and ice availability were the major constraints. For social constraints, lack of literacy ranked first. Statistical tests revealed that not all the constraints were equally severe as Xcal-14 4=Xtab* = 6.63 at 1% level of significance. The study has revealed that there is need to have policy interventions which focus on contemporary times and are derived from research and its ability to describe such constraints in order to reduce these constraints.
