India is the largest exporter of buffalo meat in the world and third largest exporter of meat after Brazil and Australia. India is bestowed with the largest livestock population in the world. The contribution of livestock and fisheries sectors to the national economy in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is 4.1 and 0.8%, respectively. The present study is the analysis of the status and competitiveness of major meat exports from India during 2000-2015. Annual Compound Growth Rate (ACGR), Cuddy Della Valle Index (CDI) and Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) were used to analyse the data. The ACGR shows that Indian meat exports have positive growth rate. The CDI shows the instability in meat exports, which has been increasing the last ten years. The results suggest that India has made tremendous progress in the export of meat. Despite having huge potential, the meat industry has not taken its due share on account of negative perceptions. In order to keep abreast with current development trend of world meat trade, there is urgent need to augment and drive India's competitiveness conspicuously by a manifold increase in meat production, diversification of species cultured, innovative marketing and institutional arrangements.
