The Russian oceanographic and fisheries oceanographic investigations in the Baltic Sea are reviewed. The possibilities are analyzed for the application of integral indices of the environmental changes in the studies on the regularities governing the reproduction of commercial fish. It has been stressed that the most important task of the fisheries oceanography is the elaboration of methods for composition of forecasts on the fluctuations of abundance and possible catches of food fish and on their distribution and behaviour.
