The results of an initial review of specialized literature on access to higher education and inequality in Uruguay are presented; in particular, at the University of the Republic (hereinafter Udelar), the main higher education institution in the country. The study refers to social gaps in income, permanence and completion of the tertiary level of training. The literary review allows us to establish that the characteristics of the Udelar, with unrestricted admission and free admission, are insufficient to reduce social differences in access, permanence and graduation from the institution

Se expone los resultados de una revisión inicial de literatura especializada sobre acceso a la educación superior y desigualdad en Uruguay; en particular, en la Universidad de la República (en adelante Udelar), principal institución universitaria del país. El estudio refiere, a brechas sociales en el ingreso, la permanencia y la finalización del nivel terciario de formación. La revisión literaria permite establecer que las características de la Udelar, con ingreso irrestricto y gratuidad, resultan insuficientes para reducir las diferencias sociales en el ingreso, en la permanencia y el egreso en la institución
