The manufacture of pig iron in ablast furnace generates gases at a rate of 10-20Nm 3 g-i. The subsequent treatment of these gases leads to two types of solid waste, depending on the purification technology used. When the separation of solids from the gases is carried out directly by filtration or electrostatic precipitation, the result is a powder with a particle size larger than 0.1 mm. If, however, the solids are first washed out in a scrubber and then thickened and filtere& a sludge remains in which the particle-size is normally less than 0.1 mm. About 2800 t of blast furnace sludge (BFS) is produced in Spain every year and its treatment or recycling poses some still unresolved problems.
