Show more [+] Less [-]The GlobalHAB Science and Implementation Plan (www.globalhab.info) identifies that new, emerging HAB related issues can be incorporated into the program. This has been the case with the Sargassum mass occurrences in the Caribbean and the west coast of Africa (Fig. 1). In 2020 GlobalHAB established a subcommittee to develop the new GlobalHAB topic. The subcommittee is comprised of four experts on Sargassum and macroalgae ecology, Brigitta van Tussenbroek (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico), Brian Lapointe (Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Florida, US), Ester Serrao (University of Algarve, Portugal) and José E. Martinelli Filho (Federal University of Parà, Brazil) (Fig. 2) and, from the GlobalHAB Scientific Steering Committee itself, Raffaele Siano (Ifremer, France) and Elisa Berdalet (ICM, Spain).
