Show more [+] Less [-]The stomatopod crustacean Squilla mantis has high local fishing importance off the Ebro delta (northwestern Mediterranean). Present annual catches are around 700 t. It is fished throughout the year and catches have a marked seasonality, with highest values occurring in winter and lowest in April-July. Trawling effort is approximately constant throughout the year. Maximum abundances occur shallower than 60 m depth. Size distribution patterns are similar for both males and females. Recruitment tends to occur in shallow waters. Adults disappear from the population between April and July. Growth is fast and similar for both sexes. Life-span from settlement is estimated to be of around 18 months. Both natural and fishing mortalities are high. The evolution of catches and population structure is closely related to the population biology of the species: recruitment, growth and adult disappearance. © 1993
