Show more [+] Less [-]The main thesis of the present paper is twofold: (1) to emphasize the importance of the sucession concept in the study of phytoplankton population, because (a) it is susceptible of wider application, (b) every stage in a typical succession has definite properties in relation to productivity, food value, and as a hydrographic indicator, and (c) spatial heterogeneity is linked to succession and shares similar interest as an indicator; (2) to express the hope that some sort of mathematical approach related to information theory will open new avenues in the analysis of the composition and properties of phytoplankton and of its variation in space and time.
