English. This is an account of the fieldwork carried out during the commemoration of the Night of the Dead at Janitzio Island, Michoacan, Mexico. This activity was challenging because it could only be carried out over a short period; consequently, it demanded detailed planning in order to obtain as much information as possible. Three data collection techniques were applied: a field diary, observation, and survey. These were supplemented by documentary research, non-participating observations, recording, participatory mapping, and a review of social networks. This allowed documenting the memories shared by tourists relative to their experience on the island during the days of the event studied.

El presente trabajo es un breve recuento sobre el trabajo de campo realizado durante la conmemoración de la noche de muertos en la isla de Janitzio, Michoacán, México. Al ser esta festividad el objeto de estudio, los trabajos de campo representaron un reto pues solo se podían realizar por un breve periodo de tiempo al año; en este sentido, la planeación tuvo que ser precisa para lograr recolectar la mayor cantidad de información tanto de la población local como de los turistas que se congregan para presenciar los rituales que se llevan a cabo.
