Proline accumulation as a biochemical indicator of drought tolerance in wheat genotypes deprived of irrigation at the start of stem elongation | La acumulación de prolina como indicador bioquímico de tolerancia a sequía en genotipos de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) sometidos a la suspensión del riego en inicio de encañazón

English. Studying the biochemical and physiological responses of plants with different capacities to deal with water stress is a valid approach to identify indicators of drought tolerance. Relative water content (RWC), osmotic potential (Ѱo), greenness index, proline accumulation and contents of chlorophyll and carotenoids were analyzed in four wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, under conditions of water supply suppression during a period of 15 days from the start of stem elongation, to determine differences in their response to drought. Irrigation withdrawal caused a significant reduction in RWC and Ѱo. Differences in proline accumulation were observed among assayed genotypes. Hydric stress induced a large proline accumulation in ACA 315 and Baguette Premium 11 stable cultivars. Watering deprivation did not cause significant effects on the content of pigments. The higher proline accumulation of ACA 315 and Baguette Premium 11 may be a relevant fact to explain the stability of such cultivars. It is concluded that concentration of accumulated proline could be used as a biochemical indicator of drought tolerance in wheat at the start of stem elongation. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.19137/semiarida.2017(02).5157

El estudio de las respuestas bioquímicas y fisiológicas de las plantas con diferentes capacidades para enfrentar el estrés hídrico es un enfoque válido para identificar indicadores de tolerancia a la sequía. Se analizó el contenido relativo de agua (CRA), potencial osmótico (Ѱo), índice de verdor, acumulación de prolina y contenido de clorofila y carotenos en cuatro genotipos de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.), sometidos a la suspensión del riego durante 15 días desde inicio de encañazón, para determinar su diferente respuesta a la sequía. La suspensión del riego causó una significativa disminución del CRA y Ѱo. La acumulación de prolina fue diferente entre los cultivares, dado que el estrés hídrico indujo una mayor acumulación de prolina en los cultivares estables, ACA 315 y Baguette Premium 11. La suspensión del riego no afectó el contenido de pigmentos. La mayor acumulación de prolina en los cultivares ACA 315 y Baguete Premium 11 puede ser relevante para explicar la estabilidad de estos genotipos. Concluimos que la concentración de prolina acumulada podría utilizarse como indicador bioquímico de tolerancia a la baja disponibilidad hídrica en trigo en inicio de encañazón. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.19137/semiarida.2017(02).5157
