Nodal regions are present in a large number of reinforced concrete structures, such as cut-and-cover tunnels, retaining walls, roofs or silos. For such discontinuity regions, the arrangement and detailing of the reinforcement largely determines their performance. In this regard, the analysis of the quasi-static response of nodal regions has typically focused on the resistance of the region, but limited works have been dedicated to the analysis of the post-peak response and the capacity to dissipate energy of such details. In this paper, an extensive database (126 test results) of nodal regions of reinforced concrete frames collected by the authors is presented and analysed. Considering these results, an analytical model for design of such regions under quasi-static loading conditions is introduced as well as its implications on the structural response. Finally, such approach is extended including considerations on the response and governing load-carrying actions in case of large deformations.
