Durante el siglo XVIII el paludismo, enfermedad endémica de la cuenca mediterránea, adquirió una incuestionable dimensión social como consecuencia, entre otras cosas, de la desaparición del terrible azote de la peste. Vinculadas a la expansión del cultivo del arroz y a la proliferación de áreas encharcadas, las fiebres tercianas aparecían con regularidad tan pronto llegaban los calores estivales. El presente trabajo analiza sus efectos sobre los habitantes de las tierras meridionales valencianas, así como los mecanismos puestos en marcha por los responsables políticos y médicos para remediar los daños causados.
Show more [+] Less [-]During the XVIII Century malaria, an endemic illness from the Mediterranean basin, had an unquestionable social dimension. As a consequence, among other things, of the extintion of the terrible effects of the plague. The tertian fever, linked to the expansion of the rice crop and the proliferation of stagnant areas, appeared regularily as soon as the summer heat arrived. The present work analyses its effects on the inhabitants of the southern Valencian lands, as well as the ways in which the responsible authorities and the doctors attempted to repair the damage suffered.
