Genetically modified crops through biotechnology | Cultivos modificados genéticamente mediante biotecnología

English. The usefulness of the genetically modified organisms (GM) as a tool in research to generate knowledge is undeniable. However, GM crops are very controversial. Currently, public opinion has been polarized into groups that fervently defend its use and groups with an equally opposite opinion. This manuscript reviews briefly the status of GM crops and the current legislation; what defines a crop to be considered as GM and the process for its commercialization within the European Union. The existing controversy around GM crops and whether the legislation should be revised or updated in any of its aspects is also exposed.

Sin embargo, los cultivos MG generan mucha polémica. En la actualidad, la opinión pública se ha polarizado en grupos que defienden su uso fervientemente y grupos con una opinión igualmente contraria. En este escrito se repasa brevemente el estado de los cultivos MG y la legislación vigente; que define que un cultivo sea considerado MG y cuál es el proceso para su comercialización dentro de la Unión Europea. También se discute sobre la polémica existente en torno a los cultivos MG y si la legislación debería ser revisada o actualizada en alguno de sus aspectos.
