Agronomic Performance and Ecosystem Services of Co-composted Biochar-based Substrates for Rooftop Agriculture in Madrid

Accelerated urbanization and growing environmental awareness have revitalized the relationship between cities and agriculture. Urban agriculture (UA) stands out for its ability to transform urban ecosystems, enhance food security, and reduce dependence on energy-intensive systems. However, its expansion on land faces significant barriers, such as high competition for space due to the profitability of construction, which limits UA to marginal and potentially contaminated areas. Among the forms of UA, rooftop agriculture (RA) offers a solution by transforming underutilized spaces into productive, soilless systems. For its development, a fertile, stable, and lightweight substrate that meets structural weight restrictions is required. Although peat is the main medium due to its properties, its environmental impact has driven the search for alternatives. Composting urban waste allows for recycling nutrient-rich byproducts for RA, aligning with the circular economy promoted by the EU. However, the gradual degradation of organic substrates affects their long-term stability. To address this problem, the thesis proposes the use of biochar, a material derived from biomass pyrolysis, as a structuring agent for composted substrates, enhancing their properties for RA. Two initial studies were conducted before expanding the experimentation to a green rooftop. The first explored the potential of coffee husks (CS) to produce high-quality compost. Mixtures of CS with pruning waste and biochar were created in various proportions, monitored over 60 days. The results showed that the composts obtained met the strictest quality standards, being rich in nitrogen (N) and potassium (K), with high water retention capacity, and without phytotoxic effects. The second study investigated the potential of compost made from coffee grounds, with and without biochar, as substitutes for peat. Mixtures with peat were tested in varying proportions, evaluating their agronomy during three stages of tomato development (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Although the substrates showed positive effects on germination, high electrical conductivity limited growth. However, mixtures of compost with biochar and 50% peat increased fruit productivity compared to the control. These findings suggest that combining biochar with coffee compost is a promising alternative to peat. The results encouraged the expansion of the study to the ICA-CSIC rooftop in Madrid. Six substrates derived from organic waste (coffee grounds, coffee husks, and seaweed) were mixed with peat to evaluate their use in RA. Substrate fertility, crop production, and quality were analyzed over a three-year rotation of tomatoes (cv. Moruno de Aranjuez), lettuces (Lactuca sativa L., cv. Romana), and chard (Beta vulgaris var. Cicla). The first year showed a 102% increase in tomato production compared to the peat control, and up to a 380% increase in lettuce and chard production. Although total production decreased in the second year, the substrates continued to outperform the controls, with quality parameters similar to those of field-grown crops. In conclusion, the research confirms that urban waste co-composted with biochar is a viable alternative as sustainable substrates for RA, with the potential to increase productivity and reduce environmental impact. RESUMEN La urbanización acelerada y la creciente conciencia ambiental han revitalizado la relación entre ciudades y agricultura. La agricultura urbana (UA) se destaca por su capacidad para transformar ecosistemas urbanos, mejorar la seguridad alimentaria y reducir la dependencia de sistemas energéticamente intensivos. Sin embargo, su expansión en suelo enfrenta barreras significativas, como la alta competitividad por el espacio debido a la rentabilidad de la construcción, que limita la UA a terrenos marginales y, potencialmente, contaminados. Entre las formas de UA, la agricultura en azoteas (RA) ofrece una solución al transformar espacios infrautilizados en sistemas productivos sin suelo. Para su desarrollo, se requiere un sustrato fértil, estable y ligero que cumpla con las restricciones estructurales de peso. Aunque la turba es el medio principal por sus propiedades, su impacto ambiental ha incentivado la búsqueda de alternativas. El compostaje de residuos urbanos permite reciclar subproductos ricos en nutrientes para la RA, alineándose con la economía circular promovida por la UE. Sin embargo, la degradación gradual de los sustratos orgánicos afecta su estabilidad a largo plazo. Para abordar este problema, la tesis propone el uso de biochar, un material derivado de la pirólisis de biomasa, como estructurante de sustratos compostados, mejorando sus propiedades para la RA. Se realizaron dos estudios iniciales antes de expandir la experimentación a una azotea verde. El primero exploró el potencial de la cascarilla de café (CS) para producir compost de alta calidad. Se crearon mezclas de CS con poda y biochar en diversas proporciones, monitoreadas durante 60 días. Los resultados mostraron que los compost obtenidos cumplen las normativas más estrictas de calidad, siendo ricos en nitrógeno (N) y potasio (K), con alta capacidad de retención hídrica, y sin efectos fitotóxicos. El segundo estudio investigó el potencial de compost de posos de café, con y sin biochar, como sustitutos de la turba. Se probaron mezclas con turba en proporciones variables, evaluando su agronomía durante tres etapas del desarrollo de tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Aunque los sustratos mostraron efectos positivos en la germinación, la alta conductividad eléctrica limitó el crecimiento. Sin embargo, las mezclas de compost con biochar y turba al 50 % aumentaron la productividad de frutos respecto al control. Estos hallazgos sugieren que combinar biochar con compost de café es una alternativa prometedora a la turba. Los resultados alentaron la expansión del estudio a la azotea del ICA-CSIC en Madrid. Seis sustratos derivados de residuos orgánicos (posos de café, cascarilla de café y algas marinas) se mezclaron con turba para evaluar su uso en RA. Se analizaron la fertilidad del sustrato, producción y calidad de cultivos en una rotación de tres años de tomate (cv. Moruno de Aranjuez), lechugas (Lactuca sativa L., cv. Romana) y acelgas (Beta vulgaris var. Cicla). El primer año arrojó un aumento del 102 % en la producción de tomate frente al control de turba, y hasta un 380 % más en la producción de lechugas y acelgas. Aunque la producción total disminuyó en el segundo año, los sustratos siguieron superando a los controles, con parámetros de calidad similares a los de cultivos en campo. En conclusión, la investigación confirma que los residuos urbanos co-compostados con biochar son una alternativa viable como sustratos sostenibles para la RA, con potencial para aumentar la productividad y reducir el impacto ambiental.
