German. In den Jahren 2003 bis 2005 wurde in verschiedenen Regionen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ein auffälliges Birkensterben beobachtet. Betroffen waren Bäume jeden Alters und unterschiedlicher Standorte im Wald- und Flurgehölz sowie in urbanen Grünanlagen. Die geschädigten und rasant absterbenden Bäume wiesen dabei eine besondere Symptomatik auf. Eine in den Jahren 2004 und 2005 exemplarisch im Bundesland Brandenburg durchgeführte Untersuchung konnte biotische Faktoren als primäre Ursache des Birkensterbens weitestgehend ausschließen. Die nachgewiesenen Sekundärschädlinge traten darüber hinaus nicht mit hoher Stetigkeit auf.Angenommen wird hingegen, dass die meteorologisch extremen Jahre 2002 und 2003 den Auslöser für den verbreiteten Vitalitätsverlust der Baumart darstellen.

English. In the years 2003 to 2005 a notable mortality of the tree species birch was observed in different regions of Germany. Trees were concerned each age and different locations in forests and landscapes as well as urban areas. The damaged and rapidly dying trees indicated special symptoms. In the years 2004 and 2005 an investigation in Brandenburg could exclude biotic factors as far as possible as the primary cause of the phenomena. The evidence of secondary parasites was not steady as well. It is accepted however that the meteorologically extreme years 2002 and 2003 represent the reason for the noteworthy lost of vitality.
