Maiszünslerbekämpfung in Darmstadt – es begann mit dem Bacillus thuringiensis | Control of the European Corn Borer in Darmstadt – it started with Bacillus thuringiensis

Im Jahr 1972 begannen in Darmstadt im damaligen Institut für biologische Schädlingsbekämpfung (heute: Institut für biologischen Pflanzenschutz) der Biologischen Bundesanstalt für Land- und Forstwirtschaft mit Versuchen zum Einsatz von Bacillus thuringiensis gegen den Maiszünsler (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.) intensive Arbeiten zur integrierten Bekämpfung dieses Schädlings. Im Laufe der letzten 35 Jahre wurden zahlreiche Detailfragen über den Einfluss von Stoppel- und Bodenbearbeitung, Ernteverfahren, Fangstreifen, Anbaulage, Prognosemöglichkeiten und Mikrosporidien, über Maiszünsler-Rassen, zur Ausbreitung des Schädlings in Deutschland und zum Maiszünsler toleranten Bt-Mais verfolgt. Beim Fachgespräch „Der Maiszünsler in Deutschland“ am 16./17. April 2007 im o. g. Institut wurde dazu ein stichprobenartiger Überblick gegeben und auf laufende und bevorstehende Arbeiten hingewiesen. Darauf beruht dieser Beitrag.

In 1972, intensive investigations were iniciated at Darmstadt in the Institute for Biological Control of the Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry about possibilities to control the European corn borer. At the beginning, Bacillus thuringiensis was tested to control the pest, using different formulations and equipments for application. In the following 35 years various trials were carried out about the effects of harvesting methods, chopping the corn stalks, tilling by rotary hoe and ploughing, trap crops and field position, as well as about prognosis, microsporidians, pest races, spreading of the pest in Germany and corn borer tolerant Bt-maize. On the meeting „The European Corn Borer in Germany“ at 16th / 17th April 2007 in the above-mentioned institute an overview was given about the past, present and future studies about this topic in Darmstadt.
