This chapter covers methods for the differential diagnosis of infectious and non-infectious causes of abortion in farm ruminants. The following agents causing abortion in cattle, sheep and goats are discussed: Border disease virus; bovine viral diarrhoea virus; bovine herpesvirus 1; bovine herpesviruses; Toxoplasma gondii; Neospora caninum; Brucella; Salmonella; Leptospira; Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus; Coxiella burnetii; Ureaplasma diversum; Chlamydia; Mycoplasma; Sarcocystis; Tritrichomonas foetus Listeria; Ehrlichia phagocytophila; and arthropod-borne viruses. The clinical signs of these diseases are also presented.
