"Schmallenberg-Virus": Eine neue Infektionskrankheit bei Wiederkäuern

German. Im Herbst 2011 wurde mit dem Schmallenberg-Virus erstmals ein Orthobunyavirus der Simbu-Serogruppe in Europa nachgewiesen. Das Virus wird offenkundig durch Vektoren, vermutlich primär durch Gnitzen übertragen. Für die Infektion sind nach bisherigem Kenntnisstand Wiederkäuer empfänglich. Adulte Tiere erkranken allenfalls mild, jedoch kommt es häufig zu diaplazentaren Infektionen. In der Folge treten schwere Missbildungen wie Gliedmaßenverkrümmungen (Arthrogryposen), Wirbelsäulen- (Kyphose, Lordose, Skoliose, Torticollis) und Schädeldeformationen (Verbiegungen, Makrozephalie, Brachygnathia inferior) sowie variable Missbildungen des Gehirns (Hydranenzephalie, Porenzephalie, Kleinhirnhypoplasie, Hypoplasie des Hirnstammes) und des Rückenmarks bei Lämmern und Kälbern auf. Die Infektion breitete sich rasch über weite Teile Nordwest-Europas aus. Bisher sind Belgien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, Luxemburg, die Niederlande, Spanien und das Vereinigte Königreich betroffen. Ob es im Jahre 2012 während der Vektorsaison zur erneuten Übertragung kommt und ob sich die Infektion dauerhaft etablieren kann, ist derzeit nicht absehbar.

The virus is apparently transmitted by arthropod vectors. Biting midges probably play an important role in transmission. According to the current state of knowledge, ruminants are susceptible to infection with Schmallenberg virus. Adult animals may develop mild disease, if any. However, transplacental infection occurs frequently and can lead to severe congenital malformations such as arthrogryposis, malformation of the vertebral column (kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis, torticollis) and of the scull (macrocephaly, brachygnathia inferior) as well as variable malformations of the brain (hydranencephaly, porencephaly, cerebellar hypoplasia, hypoplasia of the brain stem) and of the spinal cord in lambs, kids and calves. The infection spread rapidly over large parts of North-Western Europe. Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherland, Spain and the United Kingdom have been affected so far. It remains to be seen, whether the disease will re-emerge during the vector- active season in 2012 and whether the infection will establish permanently in the affected region.
