Determination of Terpene-Based VOCs Emitted from Pine Wood Using NIR Spectroscopy_Raw Data

In search of a quick and less labor-intensive method to determine the terpene emissions of Pinus sylvestris, this paper utilizes Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) combined with multivariate analysis methods and compares it to the standard measurement method according to DIN EN 16516. Spectra were measured on the surface of solid wood samples and correlated with the simultaneously determined air concentration of Terpenes from the same samples. For the α-pinene and 3-carene, which are mainly emitted from pine wood, prediction models were created using Partial Least Squares Regression. Both working with determination coefficients of 0.77 and RMSEP of 12 % max. To test the predictive capability of multiple substances simultaneously from an NIR recording, a model based on the sum of the two terpenes was built and tested. The model performs slightly worse, with a determination coefficient of 0.72 and an error of 13 % max. Despite continuously expanding the data sets for multiple models, no better metrics could be achieved, likely due to the heterogeneous structure of wood when scanning the solid wood surface. Systematic deviations were found in particularly low reference ranges, which may indicate a non-linearity in the relationship between terpenes and the NIR signal.
