Biostatistics internship report carried out at CTI Clinical Trials & Consulting – Portugal | Relatório de estágio em bioestatística realizado na CTI Clinical Trials & Consulting – Portugal

This report describes the work developed during the curricular internship at CTI Clinical Trials & Consulting – Portugal carried out for the conclusion of the master’s degree in medical statistics at the University of Aveiro. The internship aimed to examine biostatistics concepts, requirements, and practices from a CRO perspective. The first activity consisted of general training, mostly theoretical, about the regulatory environment surrounding clinical research and, therefore, the company. In this way, I learned about the internal procedures, guidelines, and topics of interest to a member of the Biostatistics team. This was followed by specific training in the area, and three documents were approached theoretically: the Protocol, the CRF, and a SAP. Subsequently, a practical component was initiated through the review and study of these documents referring to a clinical study already completed. The main activity of the internship consisted of the autonomous development of a SAP shell and TLF. This activity involved understanding the structure, organization, and specifically of documents, as well as analysis skills, methodological knowledge, and statistical writing. Finally, in addition to the work being carried out, I had the opportunity to actively participate in the team’s training, with the presentation of topics such as Table Shells in R and Meta-analysis.

O presente relatório descreve o trabalho desenvolvido durante o estágio curricular que teve lugar na CTI Clinical Trials & Consulting – Portugal, realizado para conclusão do Mestrado em Estatística Médica da Universidade de Aveiro. Este estágio teve como principal objetivo abordar conceitos, requisitos e práticas de bioestatística na perspetiva de uma CRO. A primeira atividade consistiu num treino geral, maioritariamente teórico, acerca do ambiente regulamentar que envolve a área da investigação clínica e, por conseguinte, a empresa. Desta forma, tomei conhecimento acerca dos procedimentos internos, guidelines e tópicos de interesse para um membro da equipa Biostatistics. Seguiu-se um treino específico na área, tendo sido abordados de uma forma teórica 3 documentos: o Protocolo, o CRF e o SAP. Posteriormente, iniciei uma componente prática através de revisão e estudo destes documentos referentes a um estudo clínico já concluído. A principal atividade do estágio consistiu no desenvolvimento autónomo de um SAP e TLF shells. Esta atividade envolveu compreensão da estrutura, organização e finalidade dos documentos, assim como envolveu capacidade de análise, conhecimento de métodos e escrita estatísticos. Por fim, para além do trabalho que estava a ser desenvolvido, tive a oportunidade de participar ativamente na formação da equipa em que estava inserida, com a apresentação de tópicos como Table Shells in R e Metaanalysis.
