Os blenideos, ou cabozes, são peixes sem escamas, de tamanho pequeno e médio, muito característicos das costas rochosas. O seu corpo é oblongo e está coberto por muco. Possuem uma barbatana dorsal, dividida numa região de espinhos duros e noutra, posterior, de raios moles. As fortes barbatanas pélvicas contêm apenas um a três raios. A maioria das espécies apresenta tentáculos na nuca. O dimorfismo sexual acentua-se ligeiramente durante a época da reprodução. Os machos estabelecem territórios onde as fêmeas vão depositar os ovos. Estes são guardados e cuidados pelos machos até à eclosão dos embriões. O repertório comportamental destas espécies é muito rico tendo sido largamente estudado. Algumas das espécies apresentam adaptações extraordinárias que lhes permitem viver fora de água durante algumas horas.
Show more [+] Less [-]ABSTRACT: Blennies are scaleless fishes, with an elongated and slimy body. They have a single dorsal fin with both hard and soft rays. The strong pelvic fins have only a few rays. Most of the species have small tentacles on the head. Blennies are small to medium size fishes living on rocky shores, generally in shallow water. Sexual dimorphism is apparent in some species during the reproductive season. Males establish territories to where females go to spawn. They guard and take care of the eggs until the hatching of the embryos. These species have a rich behavioral repertoire which has been well studied. Some of the species show extraordinary adaptations which enable them to spend many hours out of the water.
