The vegetation that embellishes the streets, gardens and parks must always be as healthy and aesthetically pleasant as possible. This dissertation aims to make people aware of the dangers of using pesticides unadvisedly, especially when there are other viable alternatives with greater potential for long term success. It also reveals the importance of a certain degree of tolerance regarding every organism which inhabits each garden ecosystem. Parallels are drawn between Integrated Pest Management’s agricultural practices and the needs for designing and maintaining a sustainable garden. The Calouste Gulbenkian’s Foundation gardens case study aims to illustrate the concepts developed in the theoretical part of this essay. On the other hand, the case study of an hypothetical garden intends to exemplify the practicality of the projectual and preventive/defensive least toxic solutions for pest and disease control on some of the most common plants used in Portuguese gardens.
