Laus jarðlög, landform og landmótun í Melasveit á síðjökultíma | Late Weichselian surface stratigraphy, geomorphology and landscape evolution of Melasveit

Markmið rannsóknarinnar var að kortleggja laus jarðlög og landform í Melasveit til þess að varpa ljósi á umhverfisbreytingar á síðjökultíma og byrjun nútíma. Setgerðir og landform voru kortlögð af loftmyndum og kortlagningin síðan sannreynd á vettvangi. Á vesturhluta svæðisins er mestmegnis að finna fjörusand og möl. Á austurhluta svæðisins liggur stór hryggur sem túlkaður er sem jökulgarður myndaður af jökli sem gekk niður Borgarfjörð. Meðfram sveitavegi í grennd við bæinn Súlunes er mikið af stórgrýti auk þess sem lítinn hrygg má finna á svipuðum slóðum. Þessi ummerki má túlka sem grettistök og mögulegt framhald af stóra jökulgarðinum. Norðan við jökulgarðinn eru geislóttir hryggir til merkis um strandumhverfi og myndun tanga. Fjórar strandlínur voru kortlagðar í Melasveit, í 60 m y.s., 45 m y.s., 30 m y.s. og í 25 m y.s. Þegar þessar niðurstöður eru settar í samhengi má renna stoðum undir fyrri tilgátur um að jökulgarðurinn hafi teygt sig lengra til vesturs. Þegar jökullinn hörfaði gekk sjór á land og myndaði strandlínu í 60 m y.s. og við áframhaldandi hörfun jökuls af svæðinu fór sjávarborð lækkandi. Þar sem nokkrar strandlínur hafa verið kortlagðar hér neðan við 60 m y.s. má gera ráð fyrir að strandlínumyndun á svæðinu hafi orðið í skrefum og að sjávarborð hafi því ekki lækkað samfellt. Niðurstöður rannsóknarinnar benda til að sveiflur í umhverfisaðstæðum Borgarfjarðar á síðjökultíma hafi verið umtalsverðar.

The aim of this research was to map loose sediments and landforms in Melasveit in order to give further insight into the final stages of environmental change at the end of the late Weichselian stage and into the beginning of the Holocene. Sediments and landforms were inspected and mapped according to aerial photos and then confirmed in the field. The western side of the area was mostly mapped as sand and gravel. On the eastern side is a large ridge which has been interpreted as an end moraine, created by the glacier that came down Borgarfjörður. By the road, close to the farm Súlunes, there are numerous erratics present and a small ridge with a slight elevation difference to its surroundings. These are indications of a possible extension of the large moraine. To the north of the moraine there are radial ridge formations which indicate a beach environment and the formation of a spit. Four beach lines were mapped, in 60 m a.s.l., 45 m a.s.l., 30 m a.s.l. and in 25 m a.s.l.. When these results are put into context, they support the theory that the moraine ridge extends further to the west. When the glacier retreated, the sea level rose and formed a beach line in 60 m a.s.l. and because of the further retreat of the glacier and glacioisostatic rebound, the sea level lowered again. Multiple beach lines formed below 60 m a.s.l which indicates that the beaches formed in steps and therefore did sea level not lower continuously. Results of this research show that fluctuations in environmental conditions in Borgarfjörður in the late-Weichsel stage were possibly considerable.
