Ríki Vatnajökuls. Fortíð, nútíð, framtíð | Vatnajokull Region. Past, present, future

Viðfangsefni þessa rannsóknarverkefnis var að athuga klasasamstarf í Austur-Skaftafellssýslu og hlutverk þess í markaðssetningu undir vörumerkjunum WOW! og Ríki Vatnajökuls. Klasinn hefur það að markmiði að gera svæðið meðal þekktustu ferðamannasvæða á Íslandi. Unnið er að málefnum tengdum ferðaþjónustu, matvinnslu og menningu ásamt því að auka samvirkni milli fyrirtækja og stofnana til þess að efla atvinnu-, arðbærni og mannlíf í sveitarfélaginu. Lagt var af stað í þessa rannsókn með það að leiðarljósi að kynna sér starfsemi þessa klasasamstarfs, bæði í fortíð og nútíð ásamt mögulegum framtíðaráformum. Nýttar voru eigindlegar rannsóknaraðferðir í formi staðlaðra viðtala þar sem sóst var eftir að svara eftirfarandi spurningum: Hvaða hlutverki gegna ímyndir í markaðssetningu á Ríki Vatnajökuls? Hverjar voru helstu hugmyndirnar á bakvið klasasamstarfið? Hver er staðan á klasasanum í dag? Stenst klasasamstarfið væntingar hluthafa? Hver er stefna klasasamstarfsin og hvernig er hægt að stuðla að markvissri uppbyggingu þess? Niðurstöður gefa til kynna að ímynd svæða gegni veigamiklu hlutverki í markaðssetningu sveitarfélaga og að lykillinn að því að efla samkeppnisforskot þeirra liggi í svokölluðu klasasamstarfi. Klasar efla ekki einungis gæði og framboð á vöru og þjónustu heldur séu einnig þekktir fyrir að stuðla að aukinni arðsemi fyrirtækja. Klasasamstarf Ríki Vatnajökuls virðist hafa gengið vel og stenst að stærstum hluta væntingar hluthafa þess. Þrátt fyrir það er klasasamstarfið langt frá því að vera fullkomið og kominn tími á endurskoðun.

Abstract The following research project discusses a cluster in Austur-Skaftafellssýsla and its role in marketing under the brands WOW! The clusters main purpose is to make the region one of the best known tourism sites in Iceland. The cluster works on issues related to tourism, local food products and culture, as well as increasing interoperability between the companies to promote employment, profitability and culture in the area. The main purpose of the research was to study the cluster, it’s past and present as well as potential ambitions. Qualitative research methods were utilized in the form of standard interviews which were approached to answer the following questions: What role do images play in marketing of The Vatnajokull Region? What were the main ideas behind the cluster? What is the situation in in the cluster? Does the cluster meet the expectations of shareholders? Finally where is the cluster heading and what can be done to help its development? The results suggest that the local image play’s an important role in marketing municipalities and that the key to strengthen competitive advantage lies in Clusters. Clusters promote the quality and availability of product and service and are also known to increase corporate profitability. The Vatnajokul Region seems to be doing well and meet expectations of the shareholders. Despite this the cluster is far from being perfect and time has come for a revision.
