This thesis examines contemporary Norwegian imaginative literature, and the study’s thematic criterion is the environmental crisis. The approach is textual analysis, and the normative aspects of this study are from a humanist, hermeneutic perspective. The aim is to contextualize Norwegian environmentalism – as represented by deep ecology, with a tradition of ‘back to nature’ ideologies – as expressed in contemporary literature of dystopian and utopian character. Some of the motivating questions are: does Norwegian fiction reflect similar views on nature as Norwegian environmental philosophy? Can we detect an ‘ecological awakening’ similar to the in the 1970’s? Where does man stand in considerations on an environment in crisis? The main thesis of this enquiry is that contemporary nature narratives are disillusioned and self-referential. The discouraging notion is that the greenness of Norway has been stained by native misanthropy.
