Fenologia e polinizadores de Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl. introduzida em ambiente extra amazônico | Phenology and pollinators of Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl. introduced in extra amazon environment

The Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl.) is native to the Amazon region, in hot and humid climates. Its main commercial product is the nut, which has great food importance due to its nutrient content, especially selenium. The exploitation of this non-timber forest product is mostly done in an extractive way, by collecting the fruits that have fallen on the forest floor. Its slaughter in Brazil is prohibited by federal law, due to its risk of extinction, being classified as vulnerable. One of the consequences of this legislation is the isolation of individuals, which affects their ecological relationships, causing their death. The pollination of the species is carried out by robust insects, as there is a need to lift the hood structure present in the flower to reach the nectary and, with that, carry out pollination; in addition, the dispersion is carried out by animals, which makes the species highly dependent on the fauna for its reproduction. There are few studies on the establishment of chestnut plantations outside the Amazon region, possibly because there are no reports of fruiting of the species on a larger scale outside its natural range, a fact that is occurring in an experimental plantation at the Federal University of Lavras. Thus, this study aimed to study the pollination and phenology of the species that is located in an ecotonal region between two world hotspots, the Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest. It is noted that the phenophases occur in a similar way to the region of origin, but at different rainfall conditions. As for pollination, a bee species was identified as a legitimate pollinator (Centris lutea) and some floral visitors, noting that there is effective pollination of flowers. Both the identification and the study of phenology constitute opportunities for the development of cultivation of the species outside its region of origin.

A castanheira-do-brasil (Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl.) é nativa da região amazônica, em áreas de climas quentes e úmidos. Seu principal produto comercial é a amêndoa, que possui grande importância alimentar devido aos seus teores de nutrientes, em destaque o selênio. A exploração deste produto florestal não madeireiro se dá, em sua maioria, de forma extrativista, pela coleta dos frutos caídos no chão da floresta. Seu abate no Brasil é proibido por lei federal, devido ao seu risco de extinção, sendo classificada como vulnerável. Uma das consequências desta legislação é o isolamento dos indivíduos, que afeta as suas relações ecológicas, causando a morte dos mesmos. A polinização da espécie é realizada por insetos robustos, pois há a necessidade de se levantar a estrutura de capuz presente na flor para alcançar o nectário e com isso, realizar a polinização; além disso, a dispersão é realizada por animais, o que faz a espécie ser altamente dependente da fauna para sua reprodução. Há poucos estudos de estabelecimento de plantios de castanheiras fora da região amazônica, possivelmente por não haver relatos de frutificação da espécie em maior escala fora de sua área de ocorrência natural, fato que está ocorrendo em um plantio experimental na Universidade Federal de Lavras. Com isso, este estudo teve como objetivo o estudo da fenologia e polinização da espécie que está localizada em uma região ecotonal entre dois hotspots mundiais, o Cerrado e a Mata Atlântica. Nota-se que as fenofases ocorrem de forma semelhante à região de origem, porém em épocas diferentes. Quanto à polinização, foi identificada uma espécie de abelha como polinizador legítimo (Centris lutea) e alguns visitantes florais, constatando que há a polinização efetiva das flores. Tanto a identificação dos polinizadores, quanto o estudo da fenologia constituem como oportunidades para o desenvolvimento do cultivo da espécie fora da sua região de origem.
