Efeitos de giberelinas para respostas em plantas de tomate à deficiência hídrica | Effects of gibberellins to responses in tomato plants to water deficit

Para garantir a sua sobrevivência, as plantas desenvolveram mecanismos para lidar com estresses. Trabalhos recentes tem sugerido um papel importante das giberelinas (GAs) na sobrevivência das plantas sob condições adversas. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre as implicações fisiológicas, metabólicas e bioquímicas em plantas com alterações nos níveis endógenos de GAs quando submetidas à deficiência hídrica. Dessa forma, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos fisiológicos e bioquímicos da alteração endógena nos níveis de GAs em tomateiros mutantes, gib1, gib2 e gib3, deficientes na biossíntese de GAs, em condições de deficiência hídrica. Demonstrou-se que plantas mutantes tem a capacidade de manter a água na folha por mais tempo e são capazes de recuperar a fotossíntese mais rapidamente, quando comparado ao WT, após passarem por um período de deficiência hídrica. Adicionalmente, plantas gib2 e gib1 não apresentaram murcha aparente mesmo com valores de potencial hídrico baixos. Este fenótipo foi relacionado ao nanismo, encarquilhamento e engrossamento de folhas dos genótipos mutantes. No entanto, plantas mutantes apresentaram investimento no crescimento radicular em detrimento da parte aérea. Assim, plantas menores com sistemas radiculares desenvolvidos tem a capacidade de manter a água na folha por mais tempo por utilizarem a água disponível no solo mais lentamente. A restrição do crescimento pela menor disponibilidade de GAs pode ser vantajosa em ambientes adversos, por permitir o redirecionamento de recursos energéticos para mecanismos que promovem a sobrevivência. Os resultados aqui apresentados sugerem um papel importante das GAs para respostas de aclimatação ou de tolerância à deficiência hídrica.

To ensure their survival, plants have evolved mechanisms to deal with stress. Recent work has suggested an important role of gibberellins (GAs) in plant survival under adverse conditions. However, little is known about the physiological, metabolic and biochemical implications in plants with changes in endogenous levels of GAs when subjected to water deficit. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the physiological and biochemical effects of changes in endogenous levels of GAs in mutant tomato, gib1, gib2 and gib3, deficient in the biosynthesis of GAs in water stress conditions. It was shown that mutant plants have the ability to retain water on the sheet for a longer time and are able to recover more quickly photosynthesis when compared to WT after undergoing a period of drought stress. Additionally, gib2 and gib1 plants showed no wilting apparent even with low values of water potential. This phenotype was related to stunting, leaf curling and thickening of the mutant genotype. However, mutant plants showed investment in root growth at the expense of shoot. Thus, plants with smaller root systems have developed the capacity to retain water on the leaves for a longer time by using the available water more slowly in the soil. The growth restriction due to lower availability of GAs can be advantageous in adverse environments by allowing redirection of energy resources for mechanisms that promote survival. The results presented here suggest an important role of GAs responses to acclimation or drought tolerance.
