The literature relating to the presence of drug residues and their public health significance is reviewed. Particular attention is paid to pig meat, as the routine use of drugs is widespread in intensive pig rearing systems Methods of residue detection suitable for use in an abattoir based monitoring scheme are considered. The public health importance of drug residues shown to occur in meat is examined and recommendations for their control are made.
