The time of transformations has been lasting in the Lithuanian countryside already for almost one hundred years. The regulations on land use and management have been changed not once. The outcomes of changes can be traced down in the agrarian landscape. Depopulation of rural areas or even disappearance of villages has become an severe problem in Lithuania. During the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries, Lithuania has lost more than 3 000 villages. Only the place- names have remained. Regions have been developing referred to as “demographic waste lands” whose area expands relentlessly. Depopulation of rural areas is enhanced by unfavourable economic conditions. Thousands of employable persons have left rural areas temporarily or for good. Today, many rural settlements are inhabited by elderly people after whose death there will remain nobody to engage in farming activities. The article contains analysis of the territories with population density below 15 persons per sq km.
