Effects of Staking and Time of Staking on the Growth and Yield of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)

Staking is a crucial cultivation practice in cucumber production, known to influence plant architecture and resource allocation, however the specific timing for this practice to achieve optimal results require further investigation, hence the need to investigate the effects of staking and time of staking on the growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four treatments: T0 (No staking), T1 (staking at week 3), T2 (staking at week 5), and T3 (taking at week 7), replicated three times. Data on vegetative growth and reproductive yield were collected and analyzed using ANOVA and the means were separated using Duncan Multiple Range Test at 5% probability level. Results showed that staking at 3 weeks (T1) significantly enhanced fruit yield such as fruit weight (227.13 g), number of fruits (5.67), fruit girth (16.90 cm), and fruit length (20.67 cm) compared to other treatments. Staking at week 5 (T2) showed moderate improvement, while delayed staking at week 7 (T3) had the lowest yield. The study suggests that staking cucumber plants between 3–5 weeks after planting improves both vegetative growth and yield performance.
