Oligochaetes feed on a particularly metal-rich matrix. Sediments in their alimentary tract affect the results of metal analysis. Different starvation experiments were performed before analysing the animals for Cr, Pb, Cu and Mn concentrations. The influence of the gut content on metal concentrations measured in oligochaetes is remarkable for Cr, and very slight for Cu, Pb and Mn concentrations are due to their presence both in the animal tissue and in the sediment content of the alimentary tract. It was impossible to determine the actual metal concentrations in the tissues of these oligochaetes since exchange occurred among the animals, their gut content, and the medium in which they were maintained
