A survey of preweaning mortality in pigs [housing, management, environmental factors]

During a 2-year period, the preweaning mortality in pigs and a number of possible determinative factors were studied in 54 herds. The preweaning mortality varied among herds from 10.5% to 29.8%, the average being 22.2% of pigs born. The effect of various environmental factors were tested by means of a least square technique, which revealed that management factors exerted the most marked effect on mortality from birth to weaning
