Methane production from faeces of pigs fed diets containing fibre from different sources [study conducted in Australia]

To investigate the effects of the source and the level of dietary fibre on methane production from pig excreta, fibre from each of nine different sources was included in pig diets at four different levels and the methane production characteristics of the resulting faeces were assessed by means of laboratory-scale batch digesters. The amount of total methane produced was significantly influenced by the source and in most cases by the level of fibre in the pig diet. A pronounced effect of the source but not the level of fibre in the diet on the rate of methane production also occurred. In both parameters there was a three-fold or more difference between the lowest and the highest measurement. It is concluded that the type of fibre in pig diets can exert a significant effect on both the total methane production and the rate of methane production from the resulting pig excreta.
