Regular and metered rationing of the milk replacer is an important precondition for healthy and fast-growing calves. In calf raising, due moreover to the early intake of hay and concentrates, the quantitative limitation of the milk replacer results in a marked rumen development along with high feed conversion efficiency, hence reduction of feed costs. To ration the milk replacer and check the intake of milk has been possible so far only by the aid of the time-spending calf self-feeders. Lately, the use of labour-saving automatic feeders with individual rationing of the milk replacer has been made possible.
