Economic effectiveness of a new planting distance for kenaf fiber production
1983
Vinent, E. (Ministerio de la Agricultura, Habana (Cuba). Estacion Experimental de Fibras)
The 30 cm planting distance (between rows) for kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) was compared, under commercial conditions, with the conventional 20 cm between rows planting distance, during 1981. "Cuba 108" and "Cuba 195" varieties were used in two different locations (Ciego de Avila and Las Tunas). This new planting distance decreased the number of fibrils; increased by 22,6% the dry fibre yield; decreased in 33% the amount of seed required for unit area; enhanced the steam diameter uniformity without affecting the diameter itself nor the steam height. A better fiber quality was achieved and there was a higher efficiency for the different kenaf processing machines. With the 30 cm between rows planting distance an $852,86/ha income was achieved. Because of the economic importance of this results it is recommended the immediate application of the 30 cm between rows planting distance all over the country.
