Pseudomonas solanacearum Smith is a complex species subdivided into different strains grouped in race differing fundamentally in their host range and physiological characters. The study consisted in the analysis of a large number of isolates from different cultures, years and origin, and was carried out based on the host range, the hypersensitivity reaction, the production of melanine from tyrosine, and the use of carbohydrates. Results show that our isolates behaves different from that reported in the literature for each of the aspects involved, and we believe that our strain must be placed under race number 1 or under an intermediate race between number 1 and number 3.
