Use of sand culture technique in early testing of new cultivars of tea from breeding programmes
1982
Krishnapillai, S. (Tea Research Inst. of Sri Lanka, Talawakelle)
Three new selections (TRI 3022,3032 and 3027) from the tea breeding programmes were compared along with reference clones (TRI 2025 and DT 1) in sand culture, using the differences in their total dry matter production and nitrogen uptake as the basis for selection. Total dry matter production and total nitrogen content were found to be more for TRI 3022 and the values were comparable to those of TRI 2025 and this clone emerged to be a vigorous clone as compared to TRI 3032 and 3027. The other prominent features observed in TRI 3022 were (1) increased stem thickness and basal girth and (2) production of more thickened roots as compared to other clones tested in this experiment
