A study on the efficacy of legume intercropping with sugarcane

Seven leguminous crops viz. lentil, gram, sunnhemp, kheshari, peanut, gardenpea and matikalai were grown as intercrop with sugarcane. The adjusted yield of cane + leguminous intercrops indicated advantages of legumes on sugarcane production. Although sunn hemp was grown with sugarcane and used as green manure, this combination (cane + sunn hemp) topped the list with 31.12 TCA followed by cane + kheshari (30.81 TCA) and cane + lentil (30.16 TCA). The results indicated that sunn hemp, kheshari and matikalai when grown as intercrop exert an advantageous effect on the yield of sugarcane
