Physiological studies on the growth and development of two cultivated species of jute (Corchorus olitorius L. and C. capsularis L.)

Following the classical growth analysis technique, the various growth attributes, such as relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR), specific leaf area (SLA), leaf weight ratio (LWR), index and relative leaf growth rate (RLGR) of Corchorus olitorius cv. C.G. and C. capsularis cv. D154 were calculated. Total leaf area and dry weights of different plant parts anre measured at each harvest. The first harvest was done at 26 days after sowinanand the subsequent harvests were at 4 day interval: there were 10 harvests in all. With the exception of slight fluctuations, all the growth attributes of both the species declined with plant age. In the initial harvests, RGR, NAR, RLGR and SLA values of C, capsularis were greater than that of C. olitorius, but LAR and LWR values were greater in C. olitorius. In a few harvest intervals, the growth attributes of the two species were significantly different. Simple and partial correlations indicated that both NAR and LAR were important for the variation of RGR, and both SLA and LWR were important for the variation of LAR
